Politics.
The word itself sends chills down my spine. Why is this? Our current presidential election, for example, has brought about more seperation of the people of this country than I have ever seen. I’ve heard countless arguments of the Democratic side and countless arguments of the Republican side, only to come back to the same conclusion each and every time. No one is 100% correct. No political official is operating strictly on solid religious beliefs. Everyone hates the president that won and everyone loves him. It’s absolutely incredible the way people dedicate so much time and energy into their associated elections, then simply fade into the background when it comes time to actually fulfill the duties they vowed to fulfill. I’ve asked this question before: “What if the presidential candidates devoted as much time, money, and energy to the office they were elected to that they spent trying to get there?” Can you imagine what kind of Commander in Chief we would have then?
The division of our people is what scares me. I see people get extremely angry, cursing and pointing fingers at the opposing body, stating, “I’m right, you’re wrong” and the like. We’ll make excuses until our faces turn blue about how the other person is a scandal, a draft-dodger, a terrorist, and every other colorful adjective we can muster. When and where do we draw the line and realize that WE are responsible? When you vote, you are voting for a representative, not a face, not a Saint, not a priest, not an advertiser, not an idol, and certainly not a savior. This country is in dire need of help, not outside help through loans, etcetera, but help from within. We will come through our problems if and only if we produce the solidarity needed to accurately identify and attack our problems - seek and destroy, literally.
I am not a politician and I do not know the appropriately specific strategies to eliminate our economic downturns and our corruption in governmental bodies. What I am is an American citizen. I do know what I need and what my friends and family need. We need hope, but so much more, we need results. We need change, but we don’t need drastic reformation. We need a flame, but we don’t need a blaze. We need action, but we don’t need hysteria. We need a strong military, but we don’t need to bully. What we need is a President. We don’t need a hero. The hero, we will soon come to painfully realize, is within.
